Goals:

The goals of the Division of Medical Physiology are to:

  • Promote student and faculty engagement and foster a culture of learning and service;
  • Advance the understanding of the normal functioning and interaction of the various organ systems of the body through the teaching of medical physiology to undergraduate medical and allied health science students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences;
  • Successfully train, mentor and graduate postgraduate students;
  • Increase the quality and output of research in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences;
  • Conduct outstanding laboratory-based and clinical research in medical physiology and related fields, with a strong focus on translational research relevant to the burden of disease in South Africa and Africa;
  • Promote and cultivate national and international research collaboration;
  • Actively disseminate research findings to the scientific community and the general public;
  • Participate in internal and external service delivery.

 

Duties:

The duties of the Senior Lecturer will fall within five broad umbrella themes: teaching, mentorship/supervision, research, funding generation and service delivery:

  • Teaching, learning and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate students in medical physiology;
  • Providing research training, supervision and mentorship to honours, masters and doctoral candidates;
  • Managing and coordinating academic programmes and activities;
  • Actively seeking and securing funding or third-stream income for academic and research enhancement;
  • Leading independent research while working collaboratively with members of the Division, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and beyond;
  • Actively publishing research and scholarly work in high impact, peer reviewed journals;  
  • Participating and fulfilling Departmental duties as assigned;
  • Internal as well as external academic service delivery;
  • Engaging in social awareness and community outreach programmes;
  • Supporting the implementation of the Divisional, Departmental and Faculty Strategic Plan;
  • Adhering to Faculty values at all times;
  • Contributing to an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork.

 

Requirements:

  • A doctorate or Master's degree supported by published research, or equivalent degree (e.g. MBChB) in Physiology or closely related discipline;
  • Experience in the teaching and learning of Physiology and development of study material at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Ability to design research projects and proven experience of functioning as an independent researcher/principal investigator;
  • Track record of scientific publications in accredited peer-reviewed journals;
  • Experience in the supervision, mentorship and supporting of postgraduate students at least at Masters level;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. 

 

Desired characteristics:

  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline;
  • Experience in teaching physiology to large groups of students;
  • Familiar with the use of creative teaching methodologies and learning technologies, as well as curriculum design to create an environment within which meaningful teaching and learning can flourish;
  • Evidence of successfully attracting external funding for research projects;
  • Proven record of conducting research in one of the key research focus areas of the Division (i.e. reproductive physiology or cardiovascular physiology);
  • Well versed and up-to-date in physiological sciences and relevant research methodologies;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a disciplinary environment and to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
