Job Details
The Research Safety Consultant - Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) role is a new post in the Safety Services team managed by the Head of Safety Services. It will be one of three Research Safety Consultant/Adviser posts, two of which already exist within the team.
The main aim of the three Research Safety Consultants/Advisers is to provide a comprehensive range of professional safety and wellbeing services, focusing on supporting the University research capability (in laboratories, specialised facilities and fieldwork), whilst operating from within an integrated HR service supporting colleagues to meet the University needs.
This role in particular will support the implementation of the University's Ionising and Non-Ionising Radiation Policies by co-ordinating the radiation protection services which are supported across a number of roles within HR Workplace Wellbeing Services.
This post is not a management role, and the RPO does not have the responsibility for implementing University Policies within Colleges. Their primary role is to coordinate the radiation protection services and support the implementation of the Policies in the Colleges through the Radiation Protection Supervisors and College Radiation Protection Co-ordinators.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
- A relevant degree qualification or equivalent (in a science or other subject with substantial technical content), plus significant post-qualification experience in radiation work and/or protection
- Diploma level qualification in health and safety and/or radiation protection (or equivalent) demonstrating knowledge and understanding of risk management, management systems and applicable radiological legislation
- Technical/Graduate Member of IOSH
- Member of Society for Radiological Protection
- Member of the Association for University Radiation Protection Officers (desirable)
- Experience in providing radiation safety advice (minimum of 5 years) and a knowledge and understanding of risk management systems applicable to radiological legislation
- Excellent skills in handling and interpretation of data

- Ability to operate in various consultancy modes (expert, critical friend, coaching-based advice)
Communicating and Influencing:
- Excellent communication skills (written, and spoken communications) and persuasion skills to be able to influence and collaborate with a wide range of peopleacross the University, including academics and professional services, re-enforcing and improving the University's health & safety culture
