Job Details

Research Fellow in virtual sensing for acoustics

Institute of Sound & Vibration Research

The successful applicant will join the  Institute of Sound and Vibration Research as a post-doctoral researcher to work in the area of acoustic virtual sensing. This post is part of an EPSRC Programme grant in “Digital twins for improving dynamic design”, in collaboration with the Universities of Sheffield, Bristol, Cambridge, Swansea and Liverpool and a number of  industrial partners. The overall aim of the grant is to develop robustly-validated virtual prediction tools for dynamic design.

This part of the project is motivated by the need to estimate the pressure at a listener's ears in a local active sound control system using fixed remote microphones, as they move their head in a car or aircraft [Elliott et al 2018]. This application has recently become commercially feasible because of the rapid development of head tracking technology. A similar acoustic estimation problem is required to calculate the sound played at the two ears of a listener in order to reproduce stable acoustic images as they move their head in virtual and augmented reality systems with spatial audio capabilities, and the different approaches adopted in these two applications would be considered.

The position is for 21 months and would involve collaboration both with the other Universities involved in the Programme grant and the industrial partners with whom we are working on the two motivating applications. You should hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in acoustics and/or dynamics.

About the University

You will join the world-renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, which has a strong legacy of improving health and wellbeing internationally. We are within the School of Engineering in the Facility of Engineering and Physical Sciences, which was rated as number one for research power in general engineering in REF2014 and has an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.

In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering the university was awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award in 2016. We also have the Platinum EcoAward, committing all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Application Procedure

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk.
