A project supervised by Dr Mac Carthy will focus on one or more of the keywords that played a crucial role in the making and remaking of Italian culture and society in the period 1450-1700 and that continue today to shape our evolving understanding of that time. Some of the most creative contemporary scholarship in early modern studies is being done by those who recognize that problems of culture and society in the period cannot be understood simply by defining the words involved, for the words themselves are elements of the problems, sites of encounter and conflict between different ways of inhabiting and conceiving the early modern world. Dr Mac Carthy welcomes proposals for research projects examining early modern keywords from the perspectives of intellectual history, the history of art, linguistic and literary studies, and/or social history.
