Job Purpose

This is a replacement post for the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research which will support the Institute's research and teaching portfolio.

Professor Coomarasamy leads the Tommy's National Centre for Miscarriage Research (supporting multiple RCTs and prospective interventional studies (see below) in the optimisation of Reproductive technologies and the prevention of miscarriage) and also leads work interfacing with Global Health within the University.

The Maternal and Fetal Medicine unit (Professor Kilby) have research projects focused upon the role of thyroid hormone on fetal brain and placental development, the role of vitamin D on decidualisation of the human endometrium and implantation and steroid hormone metabolism within the fetoplacental unit and the investigation of T-cell biology and fetal tolerance during human pregnancy.There is also work evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of new genomic techniques in prenatal diagnosis.There is also on going assessing screening and management of complex twin pregnancies including the STOPPIT2 study assessing the role of the Arabin Pessary in the prevention of preterm birth in twins (see below).Dr Morris is the PI in the C-STITCH and C-STITCH-2 studies.These are randomised controlled trials evaluating the type of material used to perform cervical cerclage to prevent preterm birth and the role of cervical cerclage in the management of a singleton pregnancy with a very short cervix.

There is close working with the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (under Professor Brocklehurst) and interaction with the Institute of Applied Health Research.Ongoing portfolio RCTs include - PRISM. TABLET, MifeMiso trial, STOPPIT2, C-STITCH 1 and 2, OMITT 1 and 2 and the PAGE study..The Birmingham Women's & Children's Foundation Trust has recruited the largest number of patients into clinical trials badged as ‘portfolio studies' in this financial year with the Birmingham and Black Country CLRN and we are partners in £10 million CLAHRC bid on a maternity theme.

The appointee will have 5 clinical sessions per week at the Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust and will provide on call commitments at ST5 level. The remaining 5 sessions per week will involve research and teaching as a clinical lecturer within the School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine.

All on-call commitments are funded by the Birmingham Women's and Children's Foundation Trust.

 

Person Specification

Qualifications/training

  • Candidates must have obtained MRCOG part 1 and hold a UK National Training Number (NTN). Candidates must be capable of being ST3 on-call for delivery suite.
  • Any prospective candidates must have obtained (or be within 6 months of submitting this for examination) an MD / PhD. In addition they must objectively be able to demonstrate the ability to attain funding from peer review grant bodies and have high quality publications.

 

Experience and skills, special knowledge. Supervisory experience and communication skills.

  • An interest in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching. Evidence of achievements in research - peer reviewed publications and successful grant applications.
  • Normally, any prospective candidates must have (or be within 6 months of submitting this for examination) an MD / PhD. In addition they must objectively be able to demonstrate the attainment of funding from peer review grant bodies (i.e. MRC, HTA, etc) and have high quality publications.
