Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Global Studies

The Faculty of Arts at The University of Auckland seeks applications for a senior scholar and teacher in the newly established Bachelor of Global Studies programme. This position is expected to be appointed at the level of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor, to begin during 2019.

About the role

The Bachelor of Global Studies programme is a University-wide initiative led by the Faculty of Arts with specialisations that embrace courses in the faculties of Business and Economics, Creative Arts and Industries, Engineering, Law, and Science.

The Bachelor of Global Studies is the first and only programme of its kind in New Zealand. The programme's four majors prioritise the development of engaged global citizens, whose studies are inherently transdisciplinary and issues-based. Language and area study are required for all students. The programme actively encourages overseas study and exchange. A Master's of Global Studies is planned for the near future.

The Global Studies programme has been internationally bench-marked; it has ongoing input and support from the government, business, and the not-for-profit sector. The degree has already captured the imagination of school-leavers and existing tertiary students who have joined the programme from both Auckland and other New Zealand Universities. Enrolments are rapidly increasing and there is also a growing interest from international students.

The Global Studies programme is hosted by the Faculty of Arts. The new appointee will work closely with the Programme Director and will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of the programme's core courses, as agreed with the Director.

Skills and experience

It is expected that the new appointee will hold a substantive appointment in one of the four Schools of the Faculty of Arts: Social Sciences; Humanities; Cultures, Languages, and Linguistics; or Maori Studies and Pacific Studies. The successful candidate should articulate a vision for future directions of the programme and may be called upon to lead the programme in the coming years.

The University seeks applicants who possess a strong record of scholarship and teaching and who have demonstrated their academic and administrative leadership potential. We are especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated broad interdisciplinary interests in pressing global issues and who are interested in engaging with local manifestations of these issues, including the Faculty's commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and Vision Mātauranga (Māori perspectives on knowledge and learning).

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the Asia-Pacific region and have competence in comparative area studies. Familiarity with or interest in international experiential learning initiatives is also desirable as is competence in an additional language.

The candidate will have and maintain collaborative relations with organisations and agencies involved in international research and practice, as well as initiating, applying for and participating in externally funded research projects. Proficiency in mixed-method research approaches, combining various qualitative and quantitative methods, with an established international publication record, preferably with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region (including Latin America) are essential.
