Job Details

Faculty of Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland invites applications from outstanding candidates for a position in Coastal Engineering at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professorlevel. Candidates with specialist expertise in other areas of water engineering will be considered.

The opportunity

A significant proportion of New Zealand's population and assets are located close to the coastline, and are vulnerable to a range of hazards. These hazards include storm surge, tsunamis from local and distant sources, as well as flooding from inland sources. Many of these hazards are shared by our Pacific neighbours. This environment creates significant challenges for the coastal engineering discipline.

Who are we looking for?

  • The ideal candidate for this position will have the ability to develop research linkages with the local engineering profession, as well as to contribute to research that will improve the resilience of New Zealand and Pacific communities to the effects of climate change
  • You will hold a Ph.D. in coastal engineering or a related subject, and musthave an excellent academic record as evidenced by a publication record appropriate to the appointment level sought
  • You will be expected to develop a strong research programme, and to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Civil and Environmental Engineering programmes and participate in the administrative activities of the Department, the Faculty of Engineering and the University
  • You will demonstrate experience and expertise in specialised laboratory and/or innovative field- or numerical-based research

It is anticipated that the area of research and professional practice may involve the physical or numerical modelling of coastal structures, coastal management, resilience to natural hazards, coastal processes and/or other emerging specialist subjects within coastal engineering and water engineering more generally.

In addition, depending on the appointment level sought, some or all of the following will be important:

  • Success in attracting competitive grants
  • Well-developed links with industry
  • Experience in supervision of PhD students
  • Experience in providing quality education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
