Job Details

Faculty of Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland invites applications from outstanding candidates for a position in Humanitarian Engineering at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor level (dependent upon experience).

The opportunity

The Department has a history of excellence in research and teaching in civil engineering disciplines. With a broad range of engineering disciplines across the Department, this new position will enhance current capabilities by exploring the professional and disciplinary facets of humanitarian engineering, and in particular the design and creation of engineering technologies that help solve humanitarian issues.

With fast growing populations and a rising number of stresses and shocks in New Zealand, Oceania, and worldwide, communities are increasingly facing grand humanitarian challenges, such as poverty, disaster impacts and marginalisation. The application of engineering to meet the needs of communities and to create practical and sustainable solutions for these humanitarian and development challenges will add value to our existing engineering teaching and research.

Who are we looking for?

  • The selected candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. A PhD qualification in Humanitarian Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely-related field is desirable
  • You should have an excellent academic record, as evidenced by a publication record appropriate to the appointment level sought
  • You will be expected to have dedicated your research to solving humanitarian problems through the application of structural engineering, hydraulic/hydrology/environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering and/or transportation engineering
  • You will also be able to teach any of these disciplines for our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as participating in the administrative activities of the Department, the Faculty of Engineering and the University, and maintaining involvement with organisations such as Engineers without Borders New Zealand or similar
  • Field experience in the Pacific region (and/or globally) is highly desirable

Anticipated areas of research and professional practice may involve humanitarian engineering, community resilience, and/or engineering technological innovation.

Depending upon the level of appointment sought, some or all of the following will be important:

  • Success in attracting competitive grants
  • Well-developed links with government agencies and humanitarian organisations (e.g. the World Bank, UN agencies, Red Cross, Engineers without Borders New Zealand etc)
  • Experience in the supervision of PhD students
  • Experience in providing quality education in civil engineering disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
