Senior Lecturer/Lecturer Geohydrology/Hydrogeophysics

We are seeking to appoint a lecturer in geohydrology or hydrogeophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences at Stellenbosch University. The Department employs eleven full-time academic staff members and is responsible for teaching and research in the fields of geology and environmental geochemistry. The position will complement the current teaching and research of the department with the aim to broaden its offering into the fields of geohydrology. Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in geohydrology, groundwater exploration and introductory courses in geology as required;
  • Planning and supervision of under- and postgraduate field work and administration of modules;
  • Supervision of research projects and postgraduate students;
  • Research and publication in international journals relevant to the broader research field;
  • Obtaining research funds from external sources;
  • Service delivery at departmental level.

Requirements

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, with focus on geohydrology;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field-based geohydrology, groundwater exploration and/or groundwater numerical modelling;
  • Publications in international journals in the relevant field commensurate with experience;
  • Proven track record of teaching at the tertiary level (lecturer or teaching assistant pending the level of appointment)
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Experience with groundwater modelling software such as, MODFLOW, MODPATH, FEFLOW or finite element/finite difference modelling methods
  • Experience in aquifer testing, aquifer delineation and groundwater exploration using geophysical methods
  • Proof of successful postgraduate supervision
  • Evidence of working in multidisciplinary research projects and active collaboration.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research and complete a written excercise intended to evaluate their hydrogeology knowledge and written communication skills.
