PhD Studentship: Near Field Acoustic Radiation from Ducts

School of Engineering

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:  Friday 04 January 2019
Reference:  1077418DA

Project: ISVR-ACOUS-540

Propellers, rotors and fans are frequently located within ducts to improve their aerodynamic efficiency. In this case its noise radiation from the open end is in the form of propagating duct modes, which is well-understood from classical theory. However, there is a growing tendency towards shorter ducts, particularly for aeroengines, marine and UAV propeller applications, and hence the propeller is becoming closer to the open end. In these cases the exact mechanism and characteristics of the sound radiation is less well-understood as the radiation is somewhere between purely modal and free field radiation. This project is a fundamental study into sound radiation from acoustic sources located within short ducts. The project will combine analytic, numerical and experimental methods aimed at developing guidelines on duct design for reducing sound radiation.

The successful PhD candidate will join the Acoustics group at the Institute of sound and Vibration Research (ISVR). The ISVR is recognised as one of the world's leading centres for the investigation of sound and vibration phenomena. Applications are invited from prospective UK candidates with an excellent degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University) in a relevant mathematics, science or engineering subject. Strong mathematical skills will be an advantage.

The studentship will be fully-funded including paid UK tuition fees. We are fortunate that we are able to pay an enhanced tax-free stipend that is significantly greater than the standard rate.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Phil Joseph, Acoustics Research Group, Email: pfj@isvr.soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 2172.

Funding and Eligibility

To be eligible for this studentship, applicants must be UK residents with no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have lived here for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship. This residence cannot be mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education. For further guidance on funding, please contact feps-pgr-apply@soton.ac.uk.
