Responsibilities:

The Head of Teaching Practice is responsible for the management of the work-integrated learning (WIL) of B.Ed and PGCE students in the Faculty of Education. The planning, co-ordination and assessment of the professional preparation of entry-level and pre-service teachers is a critical component of the incumbent's responsibilities, as is liaising and collaborating with staff across five academic departments involved in the professional training of students. The position requires proven management, academic and student support skills.

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in an education-related field;
  • Registered with SACE as an educator;
  • At least five years' teaching experience in higher education.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

Proven management skills in an education environment;

  • Sound interpersonal skills;
  • Advanced computer literacy (database management skills and project management software);
  • Project management skills and experience;
  • Academic leadership skills and ability to work with academic teams;
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills;
  • Advanced knowledge of the minimum requirements for teacher education qualifications (MRTEQ).

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

  • Teaching-related qualification such as a B.Ed degree, PGCE, PGCHE or related qualification;
  • Management qualification (certificate) or proven skills;
  • Experience with work-integrated learning in initial teacher education qualifications;
  • Risk management skills;
  • Established networks with schools and principals;
  • Mentorship experience;
  • Fluent in one or more African language.

 

All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 660 186 to R 818 975 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University's contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
