Job Details

The University of Bristol is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the group of Prof Jonathan Clayden. We are looking for an outstanding and ambitious chemist with research experience in organic chemistry. As part of our development of field of Dynamic Foldamer Chemistry, the successful applicant will undertake research in the application of synthetic organic chemistry to molecules with biomimetic function. Funded by a major £6M EPSRC investment in the field of Molecular Robotics, the project will explore the development of new conformationally responsive molecules that exhibit controllable properties in solution and also ultimately a membrane environment, allowing them to mimic biomolecules such as trans-membrane receptors and ion channels. Recent results from related projects have been reported in Nature Chemistry 2017, 9, 420-425 and Science 2016, 352, 575-580. The project will involve close collaboration with co-workers in the fields of analytical and membrane chemistry in Bristol and in other groups involved in the related research programmes in Manchester and Cambridge.

You should have, or be working towards, a PhD in organic chemistry. Experience of multi-step organic synthesis and in the characterisation of complex molecules by NMR spectroscopy, and an interest in conformation and molecular shape, is essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and will be expected to interact productively with other members of the research group working on related projects, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.

For informal enquiries about the vacancy please contact Jonathan Clayden, Professor of Chemistry, School of Chemistry, by e-mail: J.clayden@bristol.ac.uk or tel: +44 (0) 117 33 180 54.

Closing date for applications is 23.59 on Thursday 20th December.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
