Job Purpose

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint a Professor of Surgical Clinical Trials. The appointee to this new post is expected to lead and expand the development of surgical clinical trials within the University. Currently, our expanding portfolio in this area includes approximately 42 on-going randomised controlled trials and 9 on-going related studies (mainly cohort studies and national audits) between the two Clinical Trials Units at the University (Cancer Research Clinical Trials Unit and Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit). Recent successes include a £7m grant from NIHR to establish the NIHR Global Health Research Unit in Global Surgery aiming to develop a sustainable infrastructure for research in a range of low and middle income countries. The appointee's background can be clinical or scientific with extensive experience of working in clinical trials of surgery. 
The appointee will collaborate with senior academic staff to further the University's ambitions in surgical trials and will lead the Birmingham Surgical Trials Consortium (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/BiSTC). 

Person Specification

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an individual to provide strategic leadership in an exciting and vibrant environment. In order to deliver the requirements of this role the appointee will require a strong track record in leading collaborative research, together you should have a national and international reputation in clinical trials. Experience of delivering academic teaching and supervision of doctoral and masters students through to completion is required. An undergraduate qualification (clinical or non-clinical), a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area and a member of relevant Professional bodies. A clinically qualified appointee is expected to hold an honorary consultant contract with a local NHS Trust.
