An Interdisciplinary Study of Algorithmic Risk Prediction Technologies in the Penal System

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2019/20 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Dr Pamela Ugwudike (P.Ugwudike@soton.ac.uk) (Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, Faculty of Social Sciences) and Dr Adriane Chapman (Department of Electronics and Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences).

We are pleased to welcome applications from candidates with a strong interest in studying the mechanisms through which data-driven algorithmic technologies are transforming the landscape of criminal justice. The successful candidate will undertake an interdisciplinary research study that will use social science and computer science methods to examine conduits of algorithmic bias affecting risk prediction technologies in the justice system. The study will also develop corrective measures

Skills Required

A background in at least one characteristic from List A or B below. The student will develop more skills in these areas as the study progresses, through supervision and relevant courses. List A: social science, quantitative research methods. List B: basic data science, data mining, mathematical modelling.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £14777 (2018/19 UKRI rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
