Master's Fellowships in Neuroprotection

Two fellowships for a Master's degree are available under the scope of a Young Researcher Project (Grant number 2016/20796-2, from 2017 to 2021, with funding from the Sao Paulo Research Foundation -- FAPESP), whose aim is to evaluate the neuroprotection mediated by estrogens receptors against the toxicity of tau protein in cellular and zebrafish models. In this proposal we will first characterize the neurodegeneration caused by the overexpression of the human tau protein, commonly associated with Alzheimer's disease, and then evaluating the induction of autophagy by the activation/inhibition of estrogens receptors, seeking for new possibilities of therapeutic association for dementias treatment.

As part of this Young Researcher project, the Master fellowship aims to investigate intracellular signalling pathways mediated by the activation / inhibition of estrogens receptors in cellular and animal (zebrafish) models of tauopathies.

Those are examples of methodologies that the student will use: Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning), fluorescence and confocal microscopy, fluorimetry, zebrafish manipulation, etc. Although is not mandatory, previous expertise in those techniques are desirable.

The candidate

I am looking for candidates with a good academic background and undergraduate research training, with bachelor in the following areas: Biology, Biomedical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences, who pursue to be part of a young research group that has as objectives implementing a platform for studies of neurodegenerative diseases in cellular and zebrafish models; evaluating compounds for neuroprotection and intracellular signalling studies involved with the autophagy.
