The role

We are currently looking for up to 2 post-doctoral researchers to contribute to the Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘Global Earthquake Resilience for Natural-Engineering-Social Interacting Systems' (GENESIS).

The goal of this international project is to tackle the global challenge of modelling interacting natural-engineering-social systems subjected to cascading earthquake-triggered hazards. Holistic scenario analysis will facilitate the understanding of possible future scenarios that may unfold from different hazards as well as different risk drivers (e.g., population growth, urbanisation, land use, design standards, and human behaviour). For this purpose, a wide range of new and state-of-the-art hazard and risk models will be integrated into a comprehensive methodology by taking into account uncertainty associated with predictions of hazards and risks. It aims at enhancing community resilience against catastrophic earthquake disasters by promoting dynamic and informed decision processes.

You will be adding research capabilities in the following thematic areas:

  • ‘Effects' of mega-thrust earthquakes on nonlinear structural responses (i.e. buildings and infrastructure), this task will tackle the challenge of advanced non-linear modelling of structural and non-structural components for the accurate evaluation of effects of earthquakes;
  • Agent-based models and large-scale simulations (e.g. evacuation and transport) to investigate the linkage between earthquake disaster risks and socio-economic systems using a holistic systems-based approach.

 

You will be joining a strong research team at the University of Bristol and will be part of the international collaborative consortium of the GENESIS project including researchers from Canada and Japan.

Requirements

You will have at least a first degree or equivalent in civil engineering, geophysics or another quantitative subject, and a PhD (or one that is close to completion) in Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Engineering Reliability and Risk or Physical Sciences (or closely related disciplines). Knowledge of opensource software packages such as OpenSess and agent-based simulation software can be an advantage.

Both positions are being offered on full time, fixed term contracts for up to 12 months.
