Under the direction of the Section Chief, Benign Hematology, MSI and the Division of Hematology/Oncology, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), we are seeking an adult hematologist with a focus in platelet disorders to join a growing number of physicians with an emphasis in adult and pediatric benign hematology. This position will offer protected clinical and/or translational research focus commensurate with the applicant’s strengths and interest. The research focus will be in platelet disorders with an emphasis on integration of clinical care, diagnostic laboratory services and basic science research. This position will have defined effort as part of the hematology genetics and hemostasis laboratory based teams within the Diagnostic Laboratory at BCW. Patient service will encompass the benign hematology inpatient consult service as well as the outpatient clinic and appropriate night and weekend call. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

EDUCATION

  • M.D. or D.O. Degree
  • Board certified in Internal Medical as well as sub-specialty certification in Hematology or Hematology/Oncology
  • Current Wisconsin medical license

EXPERIENCE

  • One-two years of clinical and or/translation research, as evidenced by consistent, high-quality contributions to the scientific literature in benign hematology
  • Participation in multidisciplinary teams for the interpretation of genetic testing in patients with inherited hemostatic and thrombotic disorders, including variant interpretation and phenotypic correlation in patients with platelet disorders
  • Clinical experience in benign hematology

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • In depth understanding of clinical nonmalignant hematology, with a focus in the areas of platelet disorders, hemostasis, and thrombosis
  • Ability to work collaboratively and eventually lead cross-functional clinical and research teams
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective collaborations with scientific colleagues to further develop research goals
  • Proficiency and formal training in quality improvement and development of systems-based practice programs
  • Eligible to hold a University faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated through sound decision making and previous leadership experience
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills --ability to use and to be understood in English. The ideal candidate would also be proficient in Spanish.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Research

  • Defines and implements a clinical research program in clinical/translational congenital and acquired platelet disorders
  • Obtains funding from sources outside of the BCW
  • Maintains an active scientific publications record
  • Holds a faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor Level at MCW:  presents lectures, teaches and makes rounds with medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Contributes to growth and viability of BCW Science, Medicine and Laboratory programs.

 

 

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provides direct outpatient clinical care for adults with benign hematology disorders: examines the patient, establishes diagnoses, and prescribes, manages, monitors, and adjusts (as needed) appropriate course of treatment.  Involves and educates patients/families in plan of care.
  • Provides clinical consultative services to other physicians and healthcare workers as needed and requested.
  • Communicates and collaborates regularly, and as needed, with members of the health care team and other physicians concerning the care of specific patients.
  • Participates in regional and national hematology organizations, working groups, committees and task forces 
  • Maintains a high level of professional expertise in the field.

Diagnostic laboratory

  • Interprets platelet functional testing (platelet aggregation studies) and generates clinical reports
  • Provides laboratory consultative services to other physicians and healthcare workers as needed and requested, integrating the clinical history with laboratory findings
  • Participates in variant interpretation and clinical correlation of molecular findings of Next Generation Sequencing panels and generates clinical reports with actionable and meaningful recommendations

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Maintains medical records and related documentation in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.
  • Adheres to BCW, Bio-safety, NRC and OSHA procedures and regulations.
  • Represents the organization at designated internal and external meetings.
  • Upholds the customer service standards, confidentiality and management philosophy of BCW.
