The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent reputation, built over many decades at The University of Queensland. We deliver quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. Undergraduate teaching within the School focuses on the disciplines of chemical, biological, environmental and metallurgical engineering and postgraduate programs are available in growing fields including water, sustainable energy and petroleum engineering. For more Information about the Centre, please visit: www.uq.edu.au/chemeng

The Pyrometallurgy Innovation Centre at The University of Queensland has an outstanding international reputation for the high quality of research output. The Centre undertakes fundamental and applied research, funded through competitive Government grants and by world-wide consortia of leading international metallurgical, recycling and advanced materials (including Li batteris) industrial companies. We are seeking enthusiastic candidates interested in cutting edge fundamental as well as applied research in the field of high temperature process metallurgy, metal extraction, recycling and advanced materials manufacturing. The research involves advanced experimental studies integrated with thermodynamic modelling.  The research outcomes are essential for modern knowledge-based circular economy including recovery of valuable metals, recycling of electronics and batteries, reduction of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and overall environmental footprint of developed society.

UQ is a research intensive University ranked within the top 50 universities in the world. UQ mineral engineering is world #1 in the 2018 Shanghai's Academic Ranking of World Universities. There are excellent opportunities to establish Australian and international industry and academic contacts and careers in the field.

The role

The appointee will, in collaboration with active research team, undertake high temperature experimental fundamental and applied research of complex multi-component multi-phase metallurgical systems integrated with thermodynamic modelling using FactSage. Focus on further development of advanced analytical techniques is important.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or related field of Science or Engineering (including but not limited to Materials, Geology, Ceramics, Physics, Inorganic Chemistry), demonstrate a high level working knowledge of and expertise in chemical thermodynamics and high temperature phase equilibria. Desirable are high level skills in high temperature experiments in multi-component multi-phase systems, electron probe X-Ray microanalysis (EPMA), Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LAICPMS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Analysis (EDX), thermodynamic modelling.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion. Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 2 years with a potential extension. The remuneration package will be Research Fellow level A or B depending on experience and qualifications, and will also include employer superannuation contributions of 17%.
