Assistant Professor

Applied Climate Science

Weber State University

The College of Science at Weber State University invites applications for a tenure-track position, starting Fall 2019, in the broad area of climate science. Research interests could include climate modeling, climate-ecosystem interactions, climate-biogeochemical-cycle interrelations, and impacts of climate change on water resources, desertification, air quality and/or wildfires. Approaches using field-based environmental monitoring and/or analysis, geospatial technologies/remote sensing, or climate proxy records are all welcome.

The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor in one of seven departments of the College of Science, depending on background and teaching expertise. Our new colleague will be expected to: 1) develop and teach upper-division courses in their area(s) of expertise and lower-division courses as required, 2) establish an active and sustained research program that includes mentoring undergraduate students, 3) seek external funding in support of teaching and/or research, 4) establish collaborations with colleagues in the College of Science and across the University (e.g. Department of Geography, Sustainability Practices and Research Center); and 5) contribute to the development of new interdisciplinary curricula, including a planned environmental science degree program.

Minimum Qualifications:

● A Ph.D. in climate science or related field. Candidates who expect to complete a Ph.D. by July 1, 2019 also will be considered.
● Evidence of teaching excellence and interest in using active-learning pedagogies.
● A demonstrated commitment to conducting high-quality research, to mentoring undergraduate researchers, and to integrating research into the classroom.

Seeking applicants with excellent communication skills.

Preferred qualifications include:
● Ability to work with colleagues from across campus on interdisciplinary projects that address local, regional, and/or global issues.
● Postdoctoral experience.
● Ability to build connections with local industries, government agencies, and/or community stakeholders.

To apply, please complete the online application at https://jobs.weber.edu/ and attach a cover letter, statements of teaching philosophy and research plans, a CV, and unofficial transcripts. In addition, within the application you will need to identify three people to write and upload letters of reference for you.

Highest priority will be given to complete applications received by January 7, 2019, although screening will continue until the position is filled.

Weber State University is a primarily undergraduate institution located at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains in Ogden, Utah. For more than five decades, the institution has successfully maintained a dual mission by offering a wide range of baccalaureate programs and also by meeting regional community college needs. The College of Science embraces both missions through its programs (see https://www.weber.edu/COS/), and occupies modern labs and classrooms in the new Tracy Hall Science Center. Ogden is a beautiful city with a rich culture and history, and is 45 minutes from Salt Lake City and its international airport. An average of 223 sunny days a year and immediate access to skiing, biking, camping, hiking, and fishing make northern Utah an outdoor paradise.
