Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Present undergraduate and postgraduate lectures in both Human and Urban Geography;
  • Develop and update undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in Human and Urban Geography;
  • Contribute to the human and/or urban geography research agenda within the University;
  • Build capacity among staff and students to expand and extend UP's capacity for human and/or urban geography research;
  • Establish a sustainable research funding stream to support this endeavour;
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research publishable in high-impact journals;
  • Establish research collaborations with academics nationally and internationally;
  • Participate in the administration and general management of the Department, and liaison with the University of Pretoria's Centre for Environmental Studies.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A PhD in Geography, or a PhD in a closely related discipline;
  • At least two years' teaching experience;
  • Experience in curriculum development;
  • Experience in the development of learning materials and assessment techniques at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Evidence of successful Masters' supervision;
  • A proven publication record that demonstrates the ability to independently conduct quality human and/or urban geography research;
  • Proven experience in fundraising for academic research.

 

Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus):

  • Post-doctorate research experience;
  • A C-rating from the NRF or able to attain a C-rating within the following three years;
  • At least five years' teaching experience;
  • Evidence of a sustained record of successful Masters' supervision;
  • Evidence of current PhD supervision;
  • A sustained publication record that demonstrates the ability to independently conduct quality physical geography and/or environmental science research, and that attests to an on-going engagement in the field;
  • The applicant must have leadership experience;
  • Evidence of successfully sourcing external research funds.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

Senior Lecturer:

  • The applicant must demonstrate innovative thinking, a desire to develop and the potential to lead.

 

Associate Professor:

  • The applicant must demonstrate innovative thinking, a desire to develop and the potential to lead a strong research entity to be recognised and respected internationally.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

Senior Lecturer:

  • Evidence of community engagement and interaction with business or industry.

 

Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus):

  • Teaching expertise aligned with teaching requirements in the Department;
  • Research expertise aligned with research foci in the Department and in the University of Pretoria's Centre for Environmental Studies.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
