Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for managing, co-ordinating and carrying out duties relating to all clinical trial activities by performing the regulatory requirements, personally or through subordinates, according to accepted GCP standards. Specific duties will include:

  • Providing clinical trial sponsors with regulatory documents to be submitted for trial approval (to MCC);
  • Assisting representative from sponsors with pre-trial visits and trial initiation visits;
  • Preparing all initial protocol documents for Ethics submission and doing continued submission to Ethics regarding updated IB's amendments and notifications;
  • Co-ordinating the collection, quality, recording, maintenance and retrieval of source data relevant to clinical trials;
  • Preparing and assisting the sponsors in trial audits;
  • Ensuring that all relevant documents are available and up to date and that the PRI is informed;
  • Ensuring that training is provided (trial initiation visits) for all staff involved with the clinical trial;
  • Co-ordinating drug accountability with regards to: 
    • Stock levels;
    • Storage temperature;
    • Expired drugs;
    • Retention of used drugs/vials;
    • Drug ordering;
    • Receiving of drugs from the sponsors;
    • Removal of closed trial drugs;
    • Returning of drugs to sponsors;
    • Drug destruction and disposal;
  • Relevant reading/research of study results and conference outcomes;
  • Patient education and clinical staff education/training in study related areas;
  • Maintaining the patient registering system, i.e. logging new patient files and closing old ones;
  • Attending academic department meetings as and when required;
  • Keeping the central file up to date for Laboratory NHLC.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or equivalent;
  • Three to five years' pharmacy experience preferably in the field of chemotherapy drugs;
  • Five years' previous experience in the medical field, preferably in Medical Oncology;
  • Three to five years' working knowledge of legal pharmaceutical requirements regarding receiving, storage and dispensing of medication;
  • Registration with the Pharmacy Council.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

  • Knowledge of clinical research;
  • Ability to review Medical Oncology Protocols;
  • Ability to teach students on selected topics;
  • Knowledge of MCC and Ethics submissions;
  • Financial management of contract research skills;
  • Ability to initiate own research projects;
  • Organisational skills;
  • Knowledge of a variety of common computer programmes;
  • The ability to work in a team.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

  • Be fully competent with the mixing, dispensing and accountability of study drugs;
  • Be fully trained in Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

 

Further Information:

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
