Job Details
The post holder will be responsible for supporting the existing Tax Manager in all aspects of tax for the University and its subsidiaries - including VAT, corporation tax, international taxes and some support around employment taxes particularly global mobility.
Together with the Tax Manager, the Deputy Tax Manager will be responsible for all day-to-day tax compliance and reporting obligations across all taxes for both the UK and other territories in which the University operates. The post holder will be involved in the process of proactively identifying and managing the implications of the University's activities on taxes across multiple jurisdictions.
The Deputy Tax Manager will have an outward facing role with a view to engaging with and providing guidance to College and Departmental staff across the University and to raise and further entrench the role of the Tax Team within the University's day-to-day activities. This will include acting as the primary contact for day-to-day queries from schools, colleges, research teams etc. It will also include relationships with external advisors and HMRC teams.
The post holder will also be significantly involved initially in the implementation of a new finance and HR system and will be involved in the development of tax systems, processes and reporting with a view to transforming the current processes and building robust and forward thinking day-to-day tax reporting and data analytics for tax.
The post holder will have the opportunity to be involved in shaping the development of the Tax Function as the University moves into an exciting time which brings with it the need to move proactively from a tax perspective and manage both compliance and advisory risk.
Person Specification
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
The person we are looking for in this role is someone that has a background in VAT, and ideally exposure to some other areas of tax but more importantly is someone who has a great outward facing approach, can engage with the wider University network and can be enthusiastic about building and embedding the tax function across the University group.In addition, a firm emphasis on systems, technology and a mind-set open to the advantages and benefits that can be achieved through tax technology, systems and reporting will be required.
Essential
- A solid background in VAT
- A degree or equivalent qualification
- Either a tax qualification or an accounting qualification (e.g. CTA, AAT)
- Significant experience of working in Accountancy/Tax
- Able to develop and implement new policies and ways of working
- Some exposure or understanding of other areas of tax including corporation tax
- Strong systems and technology skills (including Excel)
- A good outward facing individual with a strong customer service ethos
- Ability to explain difficult concepts in a simple manner
- Strong interpersonal skills - an enthusiastic and ambitious person.

- Accounting experience
- Relevant sector experience
- Experience of Oracle or other similar integrated finance system
