Job Purpose

The post-holder will play a pivotal role in providing bioinformatics analyses and expertise for various projects across the university via the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB). It will include the selection and implementation of the optimal tools, pipelines and approaches for the given experiment as well as the corresponding training under the supervision of the CCB Director, Prof Jean-Baptiste Cazier.

The post-holder will be specifically responsible for the management and completion of bioinformatics analysis for numerous projects. They will participate in project design, costing and importantly, the completion of the analyses. This will be achieved by working in close collaboration with researchers across campus as well as fellow bioinformaticians within the CCB. The role will involve a broad range of datatype, scale and platforms including, but not limited to; Whole Genome Sequencing, RNASeq, Methylation, CYTOF, clinical data, modelling, Machine Learning.

The CCB is a cross-college initiative combining multiple disciplines across the University and its partners to maximise the analysis and application of Big Data, focusing on Development, Application, and Training. The CCB aims to promote excellence in Computational Biology, Systems Biology, and Bioinformatics across the range of fundamental and applied sciences, in both the University and allied Healthcare arenas. It federates expertise through world class, independent and collaborative research, as well as teaching to a broad audience, ranging from undergraduates to health care professionals. The CCB provides an environment, both physical and structural, to its ~60 members to foster collaborative work and cross-fertilisation such as the new Compute and Storage for Life Sciences (CaStLeS) infrastructure, a £2.3M initiative in the Birmingham Environment for Academic Research Cloud (BEARCloud).

The work involves;

  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results
  • Design and cost bioinformatics analyses
  • Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids
  • Operate within area of specialism
  • Contribute to generating funding
  • Contribute to teaching when appropriate in the area of expertise
  • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar
