Job Purpose

We are seeking applications for a research fellow position in the research group of Dr Ruchi Gupta in the School of Chemistry. The postholder will be part of an EPSRC funded project (https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N02074X/2). The project is focused on synthesis, characterisation and application of light-active chemistries and photo-patternable hydrogels for point-of-care and wearable optical sensors.

The postholder will be responsible for a wide range of activities but primarily will be focused on undertaking original research and will involve a broad range of skills including synthesis, experimental development, application, data interpretation and scientific writing. Training will be provided in all of the component techniques but demonstrable experience in a number of the aspects is required. It is also expected that the postholder will have experience in multidisciplinary research and have excellent communication skills.

Person Specification

We are looking for an organic chemist to design and synthesise water-soluble photocaged moieties. These moieties will then be incorporated in hydrogels to realise nanostructures. The postholder will also develop water-soluble and analyte-sensitive monomers that may be incorporated in hydrogels. Finally, the postholder will be required to apply/ develop immobilisation chemistries for covalent attachment of biorecognition species (e.g. antibodies, aptamers) to photopatterned hydrogels. You will use a range of techniques including NMR, IR, chromatography, MS, fluorescence microscopy and optical diffraction set-ups for characterisation. Additionally, you will be expected to learn and work alongside other members in the group on developing optical sensors. You should have a very strong record of publishing in leading international journals and/or at conferences and have good writing and proof reading skills.
