Job Purpose

The Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and COMPARE - the Centre Of Membrane Proteins And Receptors - are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to establish a research programme that will involve use and of cutting-edge light microscopy (e.g. light sheet and super-resolution) and advanced genetic techniques (e.g. iPS cells, CRISPR/CAS, cardiomyocytes) to study a project of relevance to cardiovascular science and disease.

The post is funded by the BHF and by COMPARE to strengthen cutting-edge imaging of cardiomyocytes and iPS derived cells as part of a larger investment into enhancing delivery of world-class translational cardiovascular science. ICVS provides an academic home to 31 PIs who join forces to conduct research from discovery to patient benefit. ICVS has a critical mass of researchers in atrial fibrillation and thromboinflammation. The post will integrate this world-leading expertise with the imaging capabilities of COMPARE. The COMPARE Imaging Laboratories in Birmingham include several single molecule and light sheet instruments.

The job holder will contribute to COMPARE and ICVS research-related activities and research-related administration. They will be expected to collect research data through a variety of research methods such as scientific experimentation and literature reviews, analyse research findings and results and present research outputs, including drafting academic publications attending research seminars etc.

Person Specification

  • A first degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
