Job Details
The University of Bristol is part of a collaborative research programme addressing “The Physics and Mechanics of Creep Cavity Nucleation and Sintering in Energy Materials” in partnership with Open University, University of Oxford and Beihang University (China). The £2M programme is funded by the Engineering Physical and Science Research Council, EPRI (US) and EDF Energy with support from CCFE (Culham), Wood Group and Special Metals Corporation.
The research programme will study the physics and mechanics of creep cavity nucleation, and the reverse process of healing by sintering, in polycrystalline materials for energy applications using both experimental and modelling approaches. The experimental work will focus on a model single phase material, a simple particle strengthened material, a commercial austenitic stainless steel, a martensitic steel (P91) and a superalloy (IN718).
An array of state-of-the-art experimental techniques will be applied to inform the development of new physics-based cavity nucleation and sintering models. These data will be used to develop the models and, indeed, allow validation.
The models will form the basis for the development of improved life-estimation procedures for high thermal efficiency power plant components.
The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to undertake innovative mechanical tests combined with microanalytical testing using its Interface Analysis Centre (IAC) facilities, for example using image correlation, high-resolution serial sectioning & x-ray tomographies and high-speed atomic force microscopy.
The appointed Research Associate will be expected to take a leading role in coordinating this challenging project and promoting close collaboration and communication between the project partners. The appointment will be within the IAC, School of Physics, but will also work closely with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Bristol.
The successful candidate should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD, DPhil or equivalent in Physics, Materials Science or a related subject, with a good understanding of physical and mechanical experimental techniques and methodologies, a willingness to work collaboratively, and be independent and strongly-motivated. The ideal candidate would come with skills in image correlation, ion and electron beam techniques and rigorous data analysis, a publication track record and experience in working within a shared laboratory environment.
