Job Purpose

The candidate will participate in a new Wellcome Trust funded research project on the role of T cell receptor signalling dynamics in controlling the differentiation of regulatory T cell populations. By doing so the post holder will contribute to furthering our understanding of the regulation of T cell responses. The post holder will assist with mouse colony management and with performing in vivo and in vitro experiments. We are looking for a candidate with either prior experience with in vivo experimentation or a willingness to learn new skills in this area. In addition, the post holder will routinely perform tissue culture, flow cytometric analysis and standard molecular biology techniques to fulfil this exciting opportunity. 

The Bending group is newly established at the University of Birmingham. You will be joining at an exciting time of expansion and be involved in the establishment of this new research direction. 

Person Specification

  • Experience with in vivo experimentation or a willingness to acquire new skills in this area 
  • Experience with standard immunological (flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA) and molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR) 
  • Tissue culture experiments using primary immune cells 
  • NVQ, BTEC/ONC or equivalent; or specific relevant experience in an appropriate subject. 
  • GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent in mathematics and English 
  • Proven practical experience of relevant techniques and scientific methods stated above and good laboratory practice. 
  • Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others 
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load after consultation with supervisor and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements 
  • Ability to work as part of a team but to perform under minimum supervision 
  • Awareness of current relevant H&S policies 
  • Proficiency in commonly used software packages
