Job Purpose

The clean room is a facility used in specialist research which requires ultra clean conditions. The room is sealed, the air filtered and the temperature and humidity are strictly controlled. The room requires experienced leadership and managerial oversight for continued, safe operation for users. There is a range of specialist equipment in the clean room used in research, requiring specialist knowledge and training for safe operation and maintenance. The total count of pieces of equipment in the clean room and supporting the room is approximately 70. The equipment in the room allows production of complex microfabricated circuits which require many process steps. The users of the room optimise these steps, using the equipment, to produce the required new, novel devices. The technical manager of the clean room will be leading the management of the room and equipment, supporting safely and training the researchers. The work is also to develop and manage the production of research level processes in collaboration with line management and users. It is expected the post holder to develop his/her own research for alternative processes. The post holder is required to work under minimal academic supervision and have financial authority in purchase and maintenance of equipment. The users are from both the university and external.

Requirements

The post holder is required to have an in-depth knowledge of clean rooms, clean room operation and the equipment used within the clean room. The knowledge is wide ranging from day to day operation, use and maintenance of specialist equipment and how the equipment can be used to produce the microfabricated circuits. The post holder must be able to understand the use of various pieces of equipment to help and train researchers as well as developing new research level solutions and processes generating the circuits. This includes suggesting new methodologies for circuit production and having the autonomy to research them to publication level. The post holder requires good conceptual understanding of the complex requirements of the users in order to provide the help and support required at all levels. This requires an authoritative figure in the area who has observed the changing needs of clean room users over several years. Working with users the post holder should be able to predict needs of the future and suggest and independently develop new microfabrication production process. He/she should suggest, plan, purchase and install the equipment. As this is a university environment the microfabricated devices required are quite diverse and the post holder must have the skill and experience to understand and develop the requirements and suggest production process for new, novel circuits, sensors and devices.

Person Specification

  • BTEC / HNC or equivalent level qualifications are required.
  • Evidence of attending specialist courses for clean room operation and the use of individual pieces of equipment
  • Demonstrable in-depth knowledge of clean rooms, clean room operation and clean room maintenance.
  • Substantial knowledge of working with a wide range of production equipment in a clean room. This includes setting up, maintenance and operation of the equipment. Examples include evaporators, sputter units, ion beam miller, wet etching, reactive ion etching, wire bonders, flip chip bonders, mask aligners.
  • Ability to use the clean room and equipment to generate new production processes to develop new electronic and other components. Research these processes and enhance them appropriately for either the post holders' personal research or other clean room users.
  • Demonstrated ability to document clean room processes and research, including the writing of academic publications and reporting at conferences and meetings.
  • Skill level is typical of running a small production environment in a manufacturing business but with the added complexity of the clean environment and specialist knowledge.
  • Willingness to be trained in further Clean Room Techniques
  • Demonstrable experience in ability to respond to changing priorities
  • Understanding of the requirements of the users in order to provide the help and support required at all levels.
  • Ability to predict needs of the future and suggest new process or equipment for the future.
  • Demonstrable skill and experience to understand and research the requirements and suggest production process for new, novel circuits, sensors and devices.
  • Ability to help and train researchers in the use of clean room equipment and technology
  • Willingness to contribute to the practical aspects of running such courses in house- ability to help provide the content and delivery of a short course in clean room design and operations for internal and external users.
