We are seeking a highly motivated Professorial Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary research team in Global Health, on a 50% FTE basis, based within the School of Human Development and Health, Global Health. The post holder would lead a broad research programme and activity in DOHaD, an area of recognised excellence for the University.  He/she would act as principal investigator on major projects, responsible for defining original research objectives, leading research programmes, developing and managing staff, setting-up and managing resources, and leading major funding bids. This would include providing leadership in the NIHR-funded Southampton 1000 DaysPlus Global Nutrition Research Group: leveraging improved nutrition preconception, during pregnancy and postpartum in Sub-Saharan Africa through novel intervention models. 

The Fellow would be working closely with the Director, Co-Director and other investigators of the study. He/she would also work closely with the site-PIs and their teams in the three African sites, as well as with collaborators and colleagues in other work areas and institutions. 

Further, the postholder would be expected to liaise with relevant scientists within the Faculty and across the University in funding applications to establish innovative research projects, liaising with UK and international funding agencies to inform and identify funding opportunities; representing the UoS at a high level on national/international bodies. In particular, the post would be required to build, and strengthen, links between African research communities and institutions and Southampton Faculty of Medicine, in the area of Global Nutrition and lifelong health.

Applicants should a have PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition, detailed knowledge of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, a significant national and international reputation in longitudinal cohort studies and life-course epidemiology, with a specific focus on Africa, a sustained record of excellence in academic publishing in high impact journals in the field, with evidence of substantial citation, a sustained record of excellence in teaching and learning activities, and a sustained record of excellence in interdisciplinary research activities. He/she should have proven ability to lead research activities, obtain substantial grants and/or contracts of for national and international research. Further, essential is a proven ability to oversee people and resource management processes in order to deliver key education, research and enterprise activities, and a proven ability to make a sustained contribution to academic leadership at discipline, academic unit and faculty level, and to demonstrate leadership abilities in Higher Education and to raise performance standards through own work areas. Proven ability to recognise and deal with obstacles and difficulties so that the team can deliver.

This post is a 0.5FTE position, which we would expect to be complementary within a FTE position, ideally with an African Institution with existing University links.
