Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in Power Electronics

Job Details

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Senior Research Associate (depending on experience) in the Electrical Energy Management Group within the Faculty of Engineering. The Group's research explores the challenges of high-efficiency electrical energy conversion systems for applications in vehicles, renewable energy, and aircraft. This research involves theoretical analysis combined with concept demonstration and test. The group has a strong activity in gate driving and wide bandgap materials, see www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/research/em/power-electronics/, and bit.ly/GaNdriver. To support this activity the group has established a range of new drivers and supporting circuits for GaN and SiC FETs.

Recent award of research funding, in collaboration with Imperial College London, and the Universities of Strathclyde and Edinburgh, has generated an opportunity for the appointment of a post-doctoral researcher in power electronics to support the Group's research into advanced GaN FET driving. We will explore means of maximising switching efficiency, reducing EMI, high-speed active gate profiling, gating techniques for enhanced reliability, temperature sensing, etc. Part of this role's responsibility is to deliver certain industry contracts, and therefore you will have the opportunity to work with industry, including the industrial sponsors of our EPSRC grants.

You should be educated to postdoctoral degree level or have equivalent industrial track record, and have experience in the designing, instrumentation, and testing of power electronic circuits that contain modern fast-switching gate-controlled power semiconductor devices. You will also be familiar with EMI effects and their mitigation. Experience in programming FPGA and microcontroller-based systems is desirable.

The post will form part of an interdisciplinary team of post-doctoral researchers and postgraduates investigating advanced power electronic conversion concepts. The post will also be affiliated to the EPSRC UK Centre in Power Electronics and there will be frequent opportunities for close interaction with other leading UK universities and industrial partners. The post-holder will be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences, and to publish research findings in high-impact journals.

This position is being offered on a full time, open-ended contract with funding for up to 2 years.

Informal enquiries can be made to Prof. Bernard Stark (Bernard.Stark@bristol.ac.uk, bit.ly/BStark).

Interviews will take place shortly after the application deadline.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
