JUNIOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANT (ONE-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT)

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 12

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be part of a small team performing diagnostics on samples obtained from domestic animals, exotics and game species using standard parasitological techniques in the field of helminthology. The primary responsibilities will be assisting in sample preparation, isolation and identification of parasites, data capturing and verification. Other duties include participating in sample collection and assisting with laboratory management and administration.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A National Diploma in Veterinary Technology;
  • Registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinary Technologist;
  • One year of experience in helminthology;
  • Six months' diagnostics experience in Veterinary Parasitology;                   
  • Subject knowledge of Veterinary Parasitology.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes)

Intermediate MS Word and Excel knowledge and database- and laboratory information software;

  • Accuracy and the ability to use common data capture software;
  • Must be able to function effectively under work pressure;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a team (relate to clients, students and colleagues/peers);
  • Willingness to work overtime, when required;
  • Knowledge of canine filarial diagnostics.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences

  • Basic knowledge of quality assurance requirements including knowledge of ISO17025.

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
