Research Fellow - Fluid Mechanics

You will carry out research aimed at developing fundamental understanding of high Reynolds-number turbulent flows relevant to different practical applications. Current projects include 1) Turbulent boundary layer flow over rough, porous and compliant surfaces; 2) Aerodynamics of flow over stalled airfoils; 3) Characteristics of tandem flapping foils, and 4) Data-assimilation methods applied to above physical problems to improve modelling strategies. You will be expected to design new experiments in wind tunnels and water flumes, record and analyze experimental data. There will also be opportunities to supervise graduate students working on topics in experimental fluid mechanics including atmospheric flows, Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) applications, wind/wave energy, and diagnostics development. 

This post is fixed term until the 31st March 2021.

It is essential that you have completed or close to completing a *PhD in Fluid Mechanics or a related area with an emphasis on experimental work. A publication record in Fluid mechanics, specifically, one or more of the following areas is desirable: experimental methods, turbulence, instabilities, free-shear flows. Experience in development and application of flow diagnostics is highly desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
