Job Details

The appointee will be part of a large (15 people) interdisciplinary team lead by Professor Themis Prodromakis and will be based at the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre. The vision of this unconventional EU programme is to deal with emergence origins (the way complex systems arise out of simple interactions) and scale it upwards: from atomic to device and eventually system level. This bottom-up approach is planned as a holistic investigation of functional oxides, nanoscale resistive switching memory (ReRAM/memristors) and emerging applications that entail both fundamental as well as applied science research.

This post will specifically involve the growth of high-quality, ultra-thin functional oxide films along with sample preparation and their characterization with state-of-the-art metrology and instrumentation. The appointee will join a highly successful and visible group of researchers in related projects, funded by an EU Project (SYNCH), together with collaborators from industry (ArC Instruments) and other European academic institutions. Throughout this appointment the successful candidate will interact closely with PhD students, for optimizing the films' growth parameters and modeling the materials' electro/thermo dynamic properties, as well as other Fellows/PhDs that will be translating the appointee's findings in practical devices and applications.

Applicants should have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Micro/nano-fabrication, and have a strong background in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Functional Oxides
  2. Electrochemistry of oxides/oxynitrides
  3. Growth techniques of thin films
  4. Materials characterisation techniques
  5. Nanoionic devices

Skills in one or more of sample preparation (FIB, SEM, TEM), sample characterization (XRD, XPS, SIMS, EELS, AFM, EDX, RBS) and electrochemistry of oxides/oxynitrides are also desirable.

There will be some travel involved both within the United Kingdom and abroad to conduct research, visit collaborators, and attend conferences.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Further information can be obtained from Professor Themis Prodromakis at email address: t.prodromakis@soton.ac.uk
