Job Details
In a £6.4m programme funded by EDF Energy, a complex, high precision, quarter-sized physical model of a representative AGR graphite core assembly has been developed. The bespoke rig contains over 40,000 components and 3,200 sensors and enables exploration of the non‐linear dynamic responses of many different types and patterns of cracked graphite bricks, representing anticipated ageing effects. Information from the experimental programme provides essential validation of the complex numerical models that are used to underpin the AGR seismic safety case arguments for life extension of the oldest AGR stations.
The successful candidate will be joining an experienced team conducting this on-going research and will assist in assembling and dismantling the rig, and in designing and running experiments to support the project in analysing model behaviour. You will work in the Earthquake Laboratory conducting critical tasks to a high degree of accuracy, following strict safety protocols. You will be expected to diagnose and rectify complex problems and contribute ideas to further develop the team's existing expertise.
You will have at least a first degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Science and ideally a PhD or MSc in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Science (either completed or close to completion) or equivalent industrial experience. Most importantly, you will have relevant, practical experience of lab-based experiments gained in a research or industrial environment and will be able to demonstrate your ability to work to a high degree of precision.
The post(s) is being offered on a full-time or part-time basis on a fixed term contract for up to 12 months with the possibility of extension for a further twelve months. Please indicate in your application whether you are interested in a full-time or part-time position.
Informal enquiries can be made to: Dr Adam Crewe, A.J.Crewe@bristol.ac.uk
