The Centre for Advanced Imaging

The Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI), a strategic initiative of The University of Queensland, is a leading imaging research facility in Australia, and one of a handful in the world. It brings together the skills of a critical mass of researchers and state-of-the-art, world- or Australian-first imaging research instruments including NMR, EPR, MRI, PET, CT, optical imaging and an on-site cyclotron and radiochemistry facilities. CAI hosts the largest Node of the National Imaging Facility (NIF) (http://anif.org.au/).

CAI conducts research across the spectrum from development of new imaging technologies, analysis of molecular structure, synthesis of MRI and PET biomarkers targeting fundamental biological processes to studies of major diseases affecting a range of organ systems, through to imaging economically significant agricultural animals and plant material, minerals and construction materials.

A multidisciplinary, cohesive student community have come together from all over the globe to CAI to undertake research training.  The Centre has an active student association (STAC) that provides many opportunities for networking and professional development, a supportive mentoring structure that will enhance personal and professional growth, an annual symposium and a well-attended weekly seminar program which attracts high profile National and International speakers.

The Australian Research Council Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology (CIBIT)

CIBIT (www.cibit.org.au) is a multidisciplinary collaboration between researchers at The University of Queensland's Centre for Advanced Imaging and partners in the Medical Technologies and Pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this national Centre is to provide research training to close critical skills gaps and to develop more effective imaging probes and scanning algorithms in conjunction with industry partners. Students will undertake industry-driven research to overcome bottlenecks in the development and application of novel diagnostics, therapeutics and theranostics and to inform changes in regulatory policy that support industry growth. Scholarships will include an industry placement for one year.

CIBIT encompasses a number of major research projects across science and business. These scholarships will focus on projects in health economics of targeted drugs and diagnostic agents, and regulatory frameworks for AI in imaging. The candidates will also work with our industry partners, including Inter-K Peptide Therapeutics, Clarity Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd, Minomic International Ltd, Theranostics (Australia) Pty Ltd, Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Clinic, Uniting Care Medical Imaging, Red Radiology Pty Ltd, Siemens Healthcare Pty Ltd and BGI International Pty Ltd.

The Role

While the PhD or MPhil projects will draw from UQ Business School, CAI and CIBIT, the principle Supervisors are in the Business School. Candidates will be able to select a research topic from the range of projects, including:

  1. Investigating the funding models for targeted agents, which are designed for well-defined disease subgroups, and because of their small markets, presenting difficulties in recouping development costs through sales. Using a combination of secondary data and targeted interviews, the project will address the important question of how drug development can be funded while ensuring affordability and minimising costs.
  2. Examining the impact of the clinical culture in diagnostic imaging and the Australian and international regulatory, pricing and reimbursement mechanisms on the clinical translation of digital decision support tools for diagnostic imaging. Clinical culture will be examined through in-depth interviews with clinicians and other users of the technology. Regulatory frameworks governing the registration of medical devices, data protection and confidentiality will be examined by analysing publicly available data.
  3. Exploring and examining how the increasing adoption and use of artificial intelligence impacts professional values, clinical culture and the multiple stakeholders involved in diagnostic imaging. Data will consist of interviews and observations with impacted stakeholders enabling an understanding of the different ways in which AI can impact the diagnostic imaging industry.
  4. Projects that fall within the overall research areas of health economics in targeted drugs, diagnostic agents and imaging, as agreed with Supervisors


The Person

Applications are invited from outstanding and enthusiastic graduates with a relevant background as follows:

  1. Academic: Specialisation in health economics, but knowledge of innovation or commercialisation processes is desirable.
  2. Methods: Skilled in econometrics and other health economics related techniques. Experience in interviewing is desirable.
  3. High quality writing skills as evidenced by outputs in conference papers, journal articles or other forms of academic writing and industry reports.
  4. Knowledge of the health industry is important and previous experience conducting research in a healthcare context highly desirable.
  5. Personal Qualities: We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, self-motivated and keen to make contributions to both theory and practice and able to collaborate with business academics and healthcare professionals.


Students may be domestic or international of high scholarly caliber and must meet the requirements for admission into the UQ Graduate School PhD or MPhil programs (https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/uq-research-degrees), including meeting the English language requirements, and must demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research.

A domestic part-time student with carer's responsibilities, a medical condition or a disability, which prevents them from studying full time may be eligible for scholarship consideration, on a case by case basis.

Remuneration

The base stipend will be at the rate of AUD $32,788 per annum (2019 rate) tax-free, indexed annually for up to two and a half (2.5) years for the MPhil and three (3) years with the possibility of two six month extensions in approved circumstances for the PhD. For the candidates who have been successful in obtaining any government-funded scholarship or UQ-funded scholarship or any other external scholarship, a top-up scholarship may be awarded.

Please note that the successful applicant(s) will be required to apply to the UQ Graduate School for admission. A successful application for this research project does not guarantee a successful application with the UQ Graduate School. Successful applicants must accept and commence within six (6) months of receiving an award.
