Job Details

Are you a great relationship builder and negotiator with excellent writing and content creation skills who can spot a news story buried deep in a technical report?

We are looking for an experienced media relations professional to raise the profile of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the nation's largest funder of health and care research.

The NIHR was established in 2006 as a whole health research system designed to fund leading edge scientific research, drive faster translation of basic science discoveries into tangible benefits for patients, and create the best possible conditions for inward investment by the life sciences sector. Today, it is widely recognised for having transformed the health research landscape in this country. Funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the NIHR invests over £1 billion each year in research. There are few NIHR-wide roles and the vast majority of its people work for or through one of four coordinating centres. In part due to this complexity, the NIHR does not enjoy the media profile it deserves and the brand is not well known outside research circles. We have recently appointed an experienced Press Office Lead who is supported by communicators from each of the coordinating centres. Together they are building relationships with key reporters and spokespeople; developing creative stories that convey the ambition, value and impacts of the NIHR; partnering with the DHSC's media and campaigns team and with external organisations including MRC and Wellcome; and managing the issues that inevitably arise as the organisation becomes more visible.

You will work in close collaboration with and provide comprehensive support to the Press Office Lead, and be an important member of the NIHR's Campaigns Team. Your organisational base will be the NIHR Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre, which is provided jointly by the University of Leeds and Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust. Your employer will be the University of Leeds and you will be based in London and report directly to the NIHR Director of Communications.
