Queensland Brain Institute

The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) works to understand the development, organisation and function of the brain under physiological and pathological conditions. The QBI was established in 2003, is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ, and it is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders.

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in both the 2010, 2012, and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

Clem Jones Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research

This position works within the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research (CJCADR) which was established within the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) in 2012, focusing on understanding pathogenic mechanisms at a molecular and cellular level and using this insight to develop therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of ageing dementia as well as better diagnostic tools.

 

The role

The sucesfull candidate will be involved in projects towards the understanding of the role of extracellular vesicles known as exosomes implicated in the spreading and induction of Alzheimer's pathology, using molecular, biochemical and microscopy techniques applied to in vitro and in vivo models. He/she will be have an active role in making and designing experiments, optimisation of techniques, the analysis of data, the critical discussion and presentation of the data, as well as helping in preparing manuscripts.

 

The person

The applicants must have a training equivalent to an undergraduate degree in the area of biomedical science/neuroscience. Applicants will have demonstrated track records and extensive experience with mouse handling/surgery and manipulation procedures. Applicants will have experience and expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, cell culture and microscopy analysis.

Applicants will also have excellent organisational and time management skills as well as a high level of written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for one (1) year with the possibility of renewal and at the HEW Level 5. The remuneration package will be in the range $66,347 - $74,098 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $77,625 - $86,694 p.a.).
