DEPARTMENT OF MERCANTILE LAW

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR (FOUR POSTS)

Responsibilities

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Teaching in a  variety of modules offered by the Department of Mercantile Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research;
  • Having an in-depth understanding of specialisation to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
  • Supervising masters and doctoral students;
  • Mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Performing academic administration and management;
  • Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.

 

Minimum Requirements

Lecturer:

  • At least LLM specialising in Tax Law and/or Aspects of Financial Law (e.g. Insurance Law, FAIS, FICA, Financial Regulation etc.) or closely related fields in Mercantile Law;
  • At least one year teaching, tutoring or related experience in a tertiary educational institution.

 

Senior Lecturer:

  • A LLD-degree with specialisation in Tax Law and/or Aspects of Financial Law (e.g. Insurance Law, FAIS, FICA, Financial Regulation etc.) or closely related fields in Mercantile Law or clear evidence of substantial progress towards completion of a doctoral degree in the areas of specialisation outlined above;
  • At least five years' teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least eight accredited quality publications, of which three should have been published in the three years preceding the year of application;
  • Evidence of successful supervision of at least two research master's degrees or four coursework master's mini-dissertations;
  • Evidence of national and some international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline.

 

Associate Professor:

  • A LLD-degree with specialisation in Tax Law and/or Aspects of Financial Law (e.g. Insurance Law, FAIS, FICA, Financial Regulation etc.) or closely related fields in Mercantile Law;
  • Preferably at least eight years' tertiary teaching experience and curriculum development;
  • At least 16 quality publications in accredited journals, demonstrating regular research output, of which six should have been accredited publications published in the three years preceding the year of application. (Accredited scholarly books or chapters in such books will also be considered);
  • Conference papers delivered internationally;
  • Preferably a suitable NRF research rating, or a substantive peer-review support, and other proof of academic standing as per university requirements, indicating local and some international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Active memberships of academic relevant national and international subject-related bodies, where applicable;
  • Evidence of successful master's supervision: four research master's, or six coursework master's mini-dissertations will be strong recommendations, and where possible, evidence of completed successful doctoral supervision or co-supervision;
  • Extensive record of academic administration and academic citizenship. This could include the following: serving on academic bodies or committees, external postgraduate examination, journal reviewing and editing, serving on editorial bodies, lecturing and presentation of papers at other universities and at esteemed conferences, etc.;
  • Proof of an established network of collaborative researchers.

 

Professor (Same as for Associate Professor, plus):

  • Preferably at least 10 years' tertiary teaching experience and curriculum development.
  • At least 30 publications in accredited journals, demonstrating regular research output, including eight accredited publications published in the last three years preceding the year of application. (Accredited books or chapters in such books will also be considered.);
  • Preferably a suitable NRF research rating, or otherwise a substantive peer review support, and other proof of academic standing as per university requirements, indicating international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Evidence of successful master's supervision (at least six research or 10 coursework master's mini-dissertations successfully completed), and/or at least two completed successful doctoral supervisions.

Lecturer:

Senior Lecturer:

  • Ability to plan and initiate discipline related research;

Associate Professor:

  • Proven ability to plan and initiate discipline related research;
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
  • Appropriate communication skills.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences

Lecturer:

  • Experience in curriculum development;
  • At  least two substantial publications in peer - reviewed journals or scholarly books in the past three years;
  • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and / or teaching;
  • Relevant academic administration experience.

 

Senior Lecturer:

  • Conference papers delivered;
  • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and / or teaching;
  • Proven record of academic administration and academic citizenship will be strong recommendations. This could include participation in departmental and faculty committees and journal reviewing and editing.

 

Associate Professor:

  • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and / or teaching.

 

Professor:

  • A published monograph.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
