Appointment of Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Arts and Law

Our heritage as Britain's first civic university is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. With the financial strength to be able to invest in intellectual capacity, the campus, and student experience, the University of Birmingham is a global university at the heart of an ambitious city. Characterised by a tradition of innovation, research at the University has broken new ground, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge and had a significant impact on people's lives.

Following the successful tenure of Professor Michael Whitby, the University now seeks to appoint a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Arts and Law. The College is strongly placed to be in the vanguard of the University's ambitions with one of the largest concentrations of humanities academics in the UK, and this an exciting opportunity for an individual to take on a strategic senior position with such impact.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Arts and Law is responsible for providing academic leadership and oversight across a vibrant community of over 670 academic and professional services staff. S/he is responsible for leading the College in the delivery of its exciting and ambitious plans to increase research income and quality over the next ten years, our International Strategy as well as supporting all of our student's education on-campus, overseas and through our developing distance-learning offer.

A member of the University Executive Board, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor has a powerful voice to play at the highest level of leadership and management in the University and works alongside a variety of senior leaders across the institution to successfully implement and deliver one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in Higher Education.

This is a role for an inspirational leader who can lead, shape, and realise the growth agenda of the College. In joining, you will have an outstanding reputation in research in one of the humanities or law, a commitment to outstanding education, proven leadership and management credentials and the vision and capability to enhance the College's performance. As a member of an outstanding leadership team you will have the opportunity to shape initiatives across the University.
