Job Details

Duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and Civilisations) using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods and technology.
  • Supervise and provide consultation sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Recruit students for undergraduate and postgraduate study.
  • Contribute to programme development and curriculum review within the Department and Faculty.
  • Ensure active involvement in research activities of the Faculty.
  • Advance own area of independent research in Classical Studies, ensuring a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity in research.
  • Contribute to community engagement initiatives of the Department.
  • Perform administrative duties relating to teaching, research and institutional obligations.
  • Contribute towards creating a strong academic identity for the Department.
  • Work in a team with colleagues within the Faculty.

 

Inherent requirements:

Lecturer:

  • Master's degree with specialisation in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and/or Civilisations).
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least second year undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate Classical Studies modules in a higher education environment.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication, ideally in an accredited journal.
  • A good academic record.

 

Senior Lecturer:

  • PhD with specialisation in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and/or Civilisations).
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least third year undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Classical Studies modules in a higher education environment.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated Master's students.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national scholarly conferences.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship (Classical Studies).
  • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.

 

Associate Professor:

  • PhD in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and/or Civilisations).
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least third year undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Classical Studies modules in a higher education environment.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated Master's and/or Doctoral students.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate students.
  • An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national and international scholarly conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship (Classical Studies).
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.

 

Required competencies:

  • Teaching experience in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and/or Civilisations).
  • Knowledge of- and ability to use Learning Management Systems (LMS) for teaching and assessment.
  • Familiarity with inclusive pedagogic practices and alternative assessment strategies.
  • Good research skills and writing abilities.
  • Sound interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) and strategic skills.
  • Ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent skilled use of Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and related programmes).
  • Ability to adapt to specific needs of students at the University of the Free State.

 

Recommendations:

Lecturer:

  • Doctoral degree or willingness to enrol for a doctoral degree in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and/or Civilisations) at the first available opportunity.
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least third year undergraduate level.
  • Proven research record of relevant publications in national accredited journals.
  • Evidence of previous involvement in engaged scholarship.
  • Experience in postgraduate supervision or the teaching of Honour's modules.
  • Active involvement in promoting Classics in the community.

 

Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor:

  • Ability to take a leadership role in accomplishing the department's long-term vision.
  • Active involvement in promoting Classics in the community.
  • Willingness to assume the position of an Academic Head of Department.
  • Experience in management in a University environment.

 

Assumption of duties: 

1 June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
