RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • The online cataloguing on an Integrated Library Services Platform (OCLC WorldShare); making use of the OCLC WorldCat database to provide access to all library collections through:
    • Original and copy cataloguing of information resources in different formats;
    • Classification and subject analysis of information resources in different formats;
  • The application and adherence to international cataloguing and descriptive metadata and subject analysis standards i.e. RDA, AACR2, DDC, LCSH, MARC21 and Dublin Core;
  • The maintenance of UP holdings on OCLC WorldCat;
  • The collection and database integrity management, e.g. identifying and correcting errors in the database, etc.;
  • Describing and enriching content on the University's institutional repository (UPSpace) using relevant metadata;
  • Providing professional guidance to and liaison with information specialists and other stakeholders.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A four-year Library Science degree (BBibl) or an equivalent four-year library qualification, i.e. three-year degree plus one year Post Graduate Library Diploma (PG Dip.LIS) or B.Inf Hons, which must include a course/module in Cataloguing;
  • Three years' relevant experience in the cataloguing of print and electronic resources in an academic environment;
  • Knowledge of and experience in the application of international cataloguing and descriptive metadata and subject analysis standards, i.e. RDA, AACR2, DDC, LCSH, MARC21 and Dublin Core.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Decision-making skills and analytical thinking;
  • Detail-oriented and the ability to manage time effectively;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently but also in a team environment;
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • Information resources in various formats;
    • International cataloguing and classification methods;
    • Library Technical Services work processes, environment and industry;
    • Current library trends and developments;

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Knowledge of and experience in the use of OCLC WorldCat database.
  • Knowledge of and experience in music cataloguing;
  • Knowledge of and experience in cataloguing of classical and/or European languages;
  • Experience in the use and impact of technology on the information environment.

 

PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates will be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
