Research Integrity Officer

(Ref. ANO/010/0119)

 

The Division for Research Development is tasked with the advancement, facilitation and support of research and postgraduate studies at Stellenbosch University (SU). This includes the formulation and implementation of policies and guidelines related to internationally benchmarked compliancy requirements for research, as well as those which serve to foster good practice and enhance competitiveness.

 

Duties:

  • Formulating and revising policies and procedures to govern responsible conduct of research;
  • Promoting and raising awareness of responsible conduct of research within the University;
  • Facilitating compliance with research ethics standards, legal requirements, funding agency requirements and SU policies;
  • Providing expert advice on the implementation of systems to facilitate, monitor and improve ethics processes;
  • Providing research ethics training, discussion forums, colloquia and workshops for ethics committee members and researchers at all levels and in all disciplines within the University;
  • Receiving any allegations of breach of research norms and standards at SU and initiating and coordinating the procedure for investigating any such allegations;
  • Representing the University on external research integrity and research ethics forums.

 

Job Requirements:

  • A postgraduate qualification in Applied Ethics or equivalent field;
  • Research ethics and research administration experience and at least five years' appropriate senior management experience in a Higher Education or related environment;
  • A thorough comprehension of current issues in responsible conduct of research, both locally and internationally;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent policy formulation, analytical and problem-solving skills.

 

Recommendation:

  • A doctoral degree in Applied Ethics or equivalent field, or a legal qualification;
  • Research experience, either in a specific discipline or in the research ethics field;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ethical complexities of large, cross-boundary research projects.
