Job Details

Applications are invited for a highly motivated Research Fellow in Chemical Biology to work under the supervision of Dr Matthias Baud on an exciting research project funded by the EPSRC for a period of 18 months in the first instance. The project will be at the interface of the chemical and biological sciences, and will combine synthetic organic chemistry with biochemical, analytical and biophysical methods. The successful candidate will focus on the development of novel biocompatible reagents and methodologies for the controlled chemical modification of proteins, and exploit these reagents to study the properties and function of key protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) using biochemical/biophysical assays. We are particularly interested in a range of PTMs resulting from cellular oxidative stress, which are currently impossible to study using conventional methodologies. In the longer term, the new reagents and methods will unlock exciting opportunities for studying the elusive function of these PTMs in human biology, with potential implications for the treatment of diseases resulting from unregulated oxidative stress.

Extensive experience in multi-step synthetic organic chemistry and characterisation of complex organic molecules is essential, and the successful candidate should hold a PhD* in synthetic organic chemistry or a closely related area (or near completion prior to taking up the appointment). Experience in handling protein samples and running biochemical/biophysical assays would be an advantage, although is not essential and training can be provided in our group. An excellent work ethic, commitment to achieve the project aims and ability to work as part as a collaborative team will be essential. You will also build responsibilities in the general running of the laboratory, including supervision of undergraduate project students as required, and written/oral communication skills through presentation at meetings and conferences, excellent preparation for a career in academia or industry.

The group is based in the modern synthetic chemistry laboratories in the School of Chemistry on the Highfield Campus, which benefits from first class support for synthetic chemistry, with exceptional MS, NMR and X-ray facilities, each supported by dedicated specialist staff.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Matthias Baud (m.baud@soton.ac.uk), School of Chemistry, University of Southampton. This position is available from 1 July 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. .

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

At the University of Southampton, we value diversity and equality. The University recognises that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance.  Due consideration will also be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.  Both the University of Southampton and Chemistry are proud to hold Athena Swan Silver Awards.
