Job Purpose

The MA Character Education, run by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues in the School of Education, is the first and only Masters of its kind in the world. The Programme adopts a multi-disciplinary (predominantly education, philosophy and psychology) approach and focuses on the theory and practice of human flourishing. Students on the Programme come from a range of sectors; including education (formal and non-formal), voluntary and business.

Two teaching focus lecturers are being recruited to teach, support and advise postgraduate students on the MA; a three year distance learning Programme. The role will include leading and tutoring on modules as well as acting as personal and dissertation supervisors for groups of students. The lecturers will also be expected to manage the Kern Scholarship programme; 25 US students starting the programme each year for the next six years. The post holder will be managed by the Director of the Programme who has overall responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to leading distance learning curriculum development and/or renewal
  • Develop and manage approaches to online teaching and learning that are innovative to character education
  • Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) and similar activity that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University.
  • Frequently update own expertise in character education and its related disciplines and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes
  • Develop programme proposals and make substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely in the Department or School, as appropriate
  • Where appropriate,undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining (including summative assessment, assessed work contributing to the final award - as a mark or as credit- such as unseen examinations, essays dissertations or presentations)
  • Lead and manage a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive) Undertake roles to support the Kern funded students on the MA - this includes recruitment and retention, in country residential, reporting and funder relations

 

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher Degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within character education.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning - preferably online learning.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others successfully at all levels.

 

Teaching

  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes, ideally with some experience in distance education and online learning
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability

 

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with funders
