Job Purpose

The School of Computer Science and the Department Economics (Birmingham Business School) are seeking to appoint two lecturers in behavioural data analytics who will work at the intersection between computer science and economics (specifically, Decision Theory, Behavioural Science, Behavioural Operations, or a related field). It is envisioned that one post will be 60% based at the School of Computer Science and 40% at the Department of Economics (Birmingham Business School) while the other will be 60% based at the Department of Economics (Birmingham Business School) and 40% at the School of Computer Science. Therefore, strong candidates with both Natural Sciences' and a quantitative Social Sciences' background are encouraged to apply.

We are seeking interdisciplinary Lecturers with background in quantitative research in such areas as Behavioural Science, Decision Theory, Game Theory, Human-Computer Interaction, Consumer Behaviour, Behavioural Operations, Quantitative Marketing, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science, Business Analytics, and Business Engineering although candidates with strong interdisciplinary background in other areas will also be considered. We particularly welcome applications from early career scientists whose work spans across natural and social sciences.

As a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and the Department of Economics (which is a part of the Birmingham Business School), you will be expected to contribute to both Schools' broad range of research, teaching and administration.
Both roles will typically also involve collaborating with others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

Administration is likely to involve making contributions within both Schools and contributions to two Colleges (College of Engineering and Physical Sciences as well as College of Social Sciences) and the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, outreach, or similar activities.
Placement: It is envisioned that new appointees will be located/sit at the Department of Economics but will participate in the regular research and teaching at both the School of Computer Science and the Department of Economics.

To create and disseminate interdisciplinary knowledge (at the intersection of computer science and economics/behavioural science) through initiating and conducting original research, through publication and through developing and delivering undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes, as appropriate to the interdisciplinary area. In addition, to contribute to both the School of Computer Science and the Department of Economics (Birmingham Business School) through management/leadership, as appropriate

 

Person Specification
Skills and Experience (as appropriate to the specific role and purpose)

  • A PhD relevant to the research/teaching area.
  • Extensive interdisciplinary research/teaching experience and scholarship or demonstrable strong potential for interdisciplinary research/teaching and excellent scholarship as determined by the best standards in the profession.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage excellent learning experiences and world-class research.
  • Evidenced skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others successfully.


Research

  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation and evidence of an ability to publish at the highest levels
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver excellent results.
  • Extensive experience of applying existing models, techniques and methods in novel and interesting ways and of successfully developing and devising new models, techniques and methods.


Teaching

  • Proven ability to successfully design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes in computer science, economics, and related areas.
  • Extensive experience and proven ability to successfully develop appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.


Management Administration

  • Proven ability to successfully contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
  • Proven ability to successfully assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Proven ability to understand and contribute to broader management/administration processes within the Departments, Schools, Colleges and University.

 

Planning and Organising (as appropriate to the specific role and purpose)

  • Plan for and set teaching programme objectives over a number of years
  • Plan and manage own teaching courses at a range of levels (including design, delivery, assessment) as agreed with the Head of School of Computer Science and the Head of the Department of Economics.
  • Plan high quality research and/or supervise other research staff
  • Manage research activities
  • Organise meetings/conferences/symposia
  • Contribute to the administration/management of research and/or teaching
  • Lead/ manage a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive)

 

Decision Making (as appropriate to the specific role and purpose)

  • Develop learning and teaching approaches, including approach to mentoring
  • Develop programme proposals and decide what contributions to make to the design of teaching programmes
  • Develop interdisciplinary research ideas
  • Decide how to develop and undertake the research
  • Decide where and when to present research findings and what publications and conferences to target for this purpose (with guidance, if required)
  • Advise, supervise and examine PhD students
  • Develop knowledge in interdisciplinary areas
  • Contribute to School and Departmental management processes

 

Internal/External Relationships (as appropriate to the specific role and purpose)

  • Contribute to recruitment of students
  • Act as external examiner
  • Develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies
  • Provide expert advice internally and externally in specialist area
  • Referee and peer review of articles for peer reviewed academic journals and grant applications by research councils and/or other major funding bodies.
  • Maintain contact (including membership of) appropriate professional bodies
  • Liaise with the relevant external research communities via seminars and conferences
