Specialist Technician (Biogeochemistry Laboratory Technician)

An exciting opportunity is available for a Specialist Technician to join the Biogeochemistry Laboratory in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. The Technician will be involved in research projects involving geomicrobiology experiments and geochemical analysis of soils and sediments.  The Technician will work closely with postgraduate and undergraduate students, supporting experimental work which will include DNA and chemical extraction from environmental and experimental samples, culturing of microorganisms, microcosm experiments in gas-tight containers, and analysis of solutions using ion chromatography and UV/VIS spectrophotometry. The role also involves receiving and logging rock, soil, and water samples shipped from the UK and international locations (following strict DEFRA procedures for soils), storing and processing them appropriately, subject to Quality Assured sample treatment, preservation, storage and analysis protocols. The post holder will be involved in the upkeep of the lab space, ensuring that all instrumentation is maintained and used according to stand operating procedures. They will also provide inductions and training to all new users, ensuring compliance with good health and safety practice in the laboratory.

The successful candidate will have a relevant qualification at GCSE, or NVQ level 2/3, or equivalent level, plus relevant work experience. A relevant degree level qualification is preferred, including BTEC, in microbiology, geomicrobiology, molecular biology, environmental chemistry, biochemistry, or equivalent. The candidate will demonstrate a proactive approach, creativity and initiative and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required, as is the ability to take a positive and flexible approach to work in order to deal with a variety of requests and tasks. The post is available as part-time or full time (21-35 hours/week), fixed funding (8-16 months depending on hours of work).
