Job Details

The Institute for Statistical Science, part of the School of Mathematics, University of Bristol, is seeking to appoint an academic at the Lecturer level (roughly equivalent to an Assistant Professor in the US system).

The University of Bristol is committed to an expansion in Data Science, and in this respect, it is in-line with major universities worldwide, all of whom recognize that Data Science now has the capacity to be transformative for human society and culture.  Among its activities, the University has established the Jean Golding Institute in 2016 as a focus for data science activity across the University, and joined the national Alan Turing Institute in 2018 as a full partner.

The Institute currently has research interests across a broad range of Statistical Science and seeks excellent researchers and dedicated teachers who will either strengthen or complement our existing areas. The University offers competitive salaries, an outstanding research environment and access to excellent students. The city of Bristol is routinely ranked as the best city to live in the UK, and is a major centre for technology, innovation and creativity.

In 2018, the Institute for Statistical Science led a bid for an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Computational Statistics and Data Science (COMPASS), with internal partners in medical, social and engineering statistics and prestigious external partners in industry and government. The CDT will admit and train at least 11 PhD students per year for five years, beginning in October 2019, on a modern high quality programme of technical and research-related skills, integrating tightly with our partners, including the Alan Turing Institute.

Informal enquires are welcome and can be directed to Prof. Jonathan Robbins (Head of School, maths-recruitment@bristol.ac.uk) as well as the Institute Director Prof. Jonathan Rougier (j.c.rougier@bristol.ac.uk).

The School of Mathematics is a supporter of the LMS Good Practice Scheme aiming at advancing women's careers in mathematics and we therefore particularly welcome applications from women for this post. http://www.maths.bris.ac.uk/admin/life/women/

Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure their referees send a letter of reference by email to maths-recruitment@bristol.ac.uk by the deadline of 6th March 2019.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
