Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge in sustainable chemical manufacturing?

Do you have research experience in reaction design and organic process development?

Do you want to work in one of the UK's leading research intensive universities?

This project aims to deliver the underpinning tools and design principles to support the use of water as a reaction media in High Value Chemical Manufacture. Water has long been promoted as an environmentally friendly and safe 'green' reaction media for synthetic processes which can lead to much more sustainable and cost effective manufacturing process. Nevertheless, the green credentials of water have been limited due to issues related to organic contamination of the water waste stream, cost of subsequent treatment and the often required organic solvents at purification stage.

You will work in a collaborative research team based in the Institute of Process Research & Development at the University of Leeds, to design reactor platforms, develop processes, including workup and purification, and process analytical tools to deliver the following objectives: (i) multi-scale batch and flow reactors to support the scale-up pathway for water-accelerated processes, (ii) standardised protocols for characterising such processes and to gain basic process understanding for scale up, and (iii) streamlined workup/product purification and recycling of water to truly deliver green processes. These outputs will have transformative impacts in the high value chemical manufacture industry, delivering lower cost and better quality controlled processes through shorter routes, reduced organic waste and facile interfacing between chemo- and biocatalytic processes. With a PhD in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry (or have submitted prior to taking up the role), you will have a strong background in reaction/reactor design and process analytics and experience in performing and optimising organic reactions.1 (Green Chem. 2016, 18, 288-296).
