Postdoctoral Research Fellow The School of Biomedical Sciences

The School of Biomedical Sciences

The University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for teaching and research in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology. The School has more than 40 full-time research and teaching staff and is one of the largest Schools of its type in Australia. It has links to other prestigious research centres on the St Lucia campus including the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Our diverse research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students. It is concerned with advancing the understanding of how cellular mechanisms contribute to the function of the human body in health and disease.  Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school's web site at https://biomedical-sciences.uq.edu.au/

In addition to its graduate research programs, the School teaches undergraduate students in Science, Medicine, and Health Sciences.

The role

This role will support a NHMRC funded project aimed at examining what impact the physicochemical properties of inhaled biodegradable nanomaterials have on the lungs and the kinetics and way in which they are cleared from the lungs. The role is responsible for synthesizing polymers, formulating polymers and lipids into nanomaterials, chemical characterization of materials, characterizing materials for drug release kinetics, cellular trafficking, performing small animal vascular cannulation surgeries, analyzing biological samples via ELISA, FACS and fluorescence microscopy and characterizing the intravenous and pulmonary pharmacokinetics and biodistribution behavior of dosed materials in rats and sheep. The role is based at UQ, but the incumbent will be required to work at Monash University (Victoria) for up to 9 months before relocating back to Brisbane to complete the remainder of the work.

The successful candidate is expected to cover their own moving expenses.

The person

Candidates with a PhD and experience in pharmaceutics, pharmacology or nanomaterial chemistry are encouraged to apply. We are seeking a motivated and collaborative research academic with a demonstrated track record of high-level experience in rodent handling, injections, surgeries, dissection, monitoring and analysing and understanding pharmacokinetic parameters. Demonstrated skills in polymer synthesis, nanomaterial formulation and chemical characterisation and experience with cell culture, FACS, fluorescence microscopy, HPLC and ELISA analysis is required. Highly developed teamwork and communication skills are essential.

The role will involve working with radiolabeled materials, and as such, applicants must demonstrate that they exhibit the outstanding ability to understand and adhere to strict occupational health and safety guidelines, standard operating procedures and maintain a clean laboratory environment.
