Job Details

Enabling Services provides a wide variety of support for students who have long-term health conditions, mental health problems or specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia). We are looking for two proactive Specialist Practitioner's (SpLD) to join our team to support the implementation of our bold and innovative Inclusive Learning Strategy and help us to continuously improve the student experience.  Above all, we are looking for individuals who are enterprising and keen to develop their practice and that of our team in ways that challenge conventional wisdom.

Successful candidates will be qualified to at least degree level or equivalent with proven experience in supporting students with specific learning difficulties in practical ways; applications are welcomed from qualified teachers, SENCOs, mentors etc. A working knowledge of assistive technology (e.g. mind mapping software) and its application to study is desirable.  Although a background in Higher Education is not essential, the ability to transfer and adapt your skills to a new environment is key.

Working closely with the Inclusive Learning Manager and our team of Specialist Practitioners, your main areas of work will include:

  • The delivery of high quality study skills tutorials to support students with specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia) in a flexible way (this may include some evening and weekend working)
  • Developing and delivering our expanding group study workshops to students with specific learning difficulties
  • Meeting with a high volume of students to review and discuss reasonable adjustments (such as additional exam arrangements) and following pre-determined processes to administer follow-up and communication with relevant staff
  • Establishing and developing support for students in using assistive technology, with the benefit of a newly developed Assistive Technology suite
  • Developing and promoting new initiatives to support students with specific learning difficulties
  • Developing links with the faculties across the University to promote inclusive learning and teaching
  • The role will combine student-facing work with supporting staff to develop inclusive learning and project work. You will work closely with our team of Specialist Practitioners and will need to build relationships effectively with a range of internal partners.

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to engage and motivate students
  • Problem solving skills to introduce new ways of working
  • Experience of managing a fluctuating and often demanding workload
  • Skills of persuasion and influence

Please note, being able to work flexibly is a requirement as you will be part of a rota that operates from 8am-6pm across weekdays and that occasional weekend working is required for Open Days, Welcome weekend and also Enabling Service Transition Days.

The salary for this post starts from £30,395. Please note that we would normally expect to recruit at the bottom of the scale. Further benefits include the opportunity to join the University's pension scheme, 30 days annual leave and access to a number of University employer discount schemes.

Please be aware that administrative work for this role takes place in an open plan office.

Please note that Student Services use standardised job descriptions. For this post, you will be recruited against our Specialist Practitioner job description, which is attached for full details. As a result, your contract and day-to-day job title will be as per this job description.

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Ita Holmes (Recruitment Team) +44 (0) 23 8059 9002. Please quote reference 1111519EW on all correspondence.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
